About Salton Sea State Recreation Area

Located in the Colorado Desert of Southern California, the Salton Sea State Recreation Area surrounds the Salton Sea, a shallow, saline lake formed in 1905 after a canal breach from the Colorado River. The lake sits approximately 230 feet below sea level and covers about 376 square miles, making it California's largest inland lake. This unique ecosystem attracts millions of migratory birds, including pelicans, herons, egrets, and various shorebirds, making it one of the most important bird habitats in the western United States. The surrounding desert and shoreline areas host diverse habitats for desert fauna and flora. Historically, the Sea was once a popular resort and recreational spot, with boating and fishing being primary activities. Today, despite environmental challenges including rising salinity and decreasing water levels, the area remains a popular destination for anglers targeting tilapia and corvina, bird watchers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts. The campground and picnic areas are located near the northern shore close to Mecca, providing access to boat launches and fishing piers. The area's stark landscape contrasts and rich birdlife create a compelling outdoor experience. Visitors are drawn by the combination of desert scenery, wildlife, and unique cultural history related to the Sea's formation and fluctuating environment. The park serves as a vital refuge for wildlife and a place for eco-tourism and outdoor recreation in a remote desert setting.
